Google Employees to Float Into RWC Aboard Private Ferry

For at least the next month, the Port of Redwood City will serve as a pit-stop for Google employees on their way to work from San Francisco to the company's headquarters in Mountain View. 

On Wednesday KPIX 5 reported that Google, which has come under fire recently for the use of private shuttles from San Francisco to its South Bay campus, has launched a private ferry that will deliver employees to the shores of Redwood City. 

According to the report, workers will be transported across the San Francisco Bay on a multi-hulled 83′ catamaran, called the Triumphant, which holds 149 passengers. Two trips will be run in the morning from San Francisco to Redwood City, and two return trips in the evening. Total travel time---47 minutes each way. 

The service is being offered on a 30-day trial basis and Google is paying the the fees at each port. In an interview with KPIX 5, San Francisco Maritime Director Peter Dailey said, “Right now, per landing it’s around $50, maybe a little less, per call.”

The Coast Guard told KPIX 5 if Google is not charging employees for the service, the ferry would be treated the same as a recreational vessel and would not require an inspection.

It is unclear how the employees are getting from Redwood City to Google's Mountain View and other South Bay campuses.
