Mavericks is going high-tech.

Apple revealed the new Mac OS X Mavericks operating system at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on Monday, giving a nod to the unique coastline of the company's home state.

Mavericks is a big-wave surf spot two miles off shore from Pillar Point Harbor, just north of Half Moon Bay and about 38 miles from Cupertino, where Apple is based. The break, created by an underwater rock formation, is home to an annual invitation-only surf contest.

Apple's new software will come out in the fall. It will extend battery life, improve responsiveness and increase compatibility with other Apple products, like the iPad and iPhone, by adding iBooks, CNET reported.

Apple has been naming its software after big cats for the past decade. The most-recent version was Mountain Lion, released in 2012.

Apple also unveiled a new Mac Pro at the conference Monday.Read about it here.
