Patch's Guide to Foster City Holiday Lights

Before hanging your stockings by the chimney with care, go for a drive to "ooh" and "aah" at the neighborhood holiday displays.

Start a new holiday tradition this Christmas Eve by jumping in the car with the family or a friend to tour the lights around town. Though sightings can be sparse along the main roads, we've mapped out a neighborhood trek with glowing Santas, reindeer and nativity scenes --- and maybe even a hot coaco run or two!

  1. Begin your trip at off Metro Central Blvd, where you'll surely need to stock up on cocoa and coffee to fuel the ride. A peppermint of eggnog latte should do the trick, or bring along a thermos full of apple cider and enjoy homemade drinks. If you aren't feeling thirsty at the beginning, never fear—there's a second coffee stop available midway.
  2. Turn onto Shell Blvd, drive past East Hillsdale and pull in by the , where the hot drinks will keep the warmth as you stroll along to check out the festive lagoon lights (doubly cool because of the water's reflection). Continue down the path for as long as the internal body temperature lasts, then return to the car to turn the heater on full blast!
  3. Drive down Shell and turn left at Bounty Drive, where a few houses will light your way. Go past the dog park on Foster City Blvd, turn right on Lurline Drive to a quick left on Constitution Avenue, where there are many admirable displays—a few nativity scenes and moving lighted deer. Make your way around the neighborhood and back to Bounty, turn left of Foster City Blvd over the lagoon to our next destination.
  4. Turn right at Marlin Avenue and slowly approach the corner of Marlin and Catamaran, where four houses on the left have taken the time to truly deck the halls. A few Santa and reindeer displays should strike up a smile.
  5. Follow Catamaran to Spinnaker Street (let the lights guide you) and turn around the dead-end to a left on Schooner Street, right on Barkentine and Catamaran finishes this neighborhood loop. Some of the most impressively decorated houses are in this area, so be sure to take your time and stretch your legs.
  6. Exit back onto Foster City Blvd, turn left for another stop off, and head to Beach Park Blvd, where the lights are few but the moonlit ocean is a gift in itself. If you haven't gotten your fill of lights, a school of lit dolphins swims in front of a house on Halibut Blvd.
  7. Finish the drive alongside Beach Park and head home, with thoughts of twinkling lights in your mind (and sugar plum fairies too, of course). Our little community knows how to be festive!

As you head to sleep tonight, don't forget the cookies, milk and carrots for the reindeer! Santa Claus is coming to town…
