A round-up of major news stories from the past week.

Monday, May 14

's Daisy Troop 62043, a group of kindergarten and first-grade girls, and hand-written cards to soldiers in Afghanistan on Thursday.

The girls wrote thank you notes for protecting the country, colored "We Salute You" coloring pages, wrote individual cards to each service member and helped pack two boxes full of cookies.

The San Mateo-Foster City School District announced on Tuesday that four of its schools were by a prestigious business group.

Audubon, Baywood, Brewer Island, and Foster City Elementary Schools were selected by California Business for Education Excellence as 2011 Honor Roll schools for consistently demonstrating high academic achievement and making significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among their students.

Friday, May 18

A San Mateo man could face charges for what authorities say was a racially motivated roadway attack.

The suspect, who is a Caucasian, yelled racial slurs and threw quarters at a family of four of Asian descent in another vehicle with two children that was either or in front or behind the car he was a passenger in, police said.

The incident, which police say occurred on April 26 at about 10:15 a.m. at the intersection of Triton and Pilgrim Drives, has been referred to the District Attorney as a hate crime, police said.
