San Mateo Readies to 'Light the Night'

Peninsula city is among 230 communities in the United States in Canada honoring those who've suffered from cancer. Proceeds from the event benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

San Mateo will join communities around the continent tonight hosting an event honoring those who've suffered from cancer.

The annual "Light the Night Walk" celebrates those who've won their battles with cancer as well as those who've succumbed to the deadly illness, organizers say.

The event's opening ceremony, which starts at 5 p.m. at Central Park (50 East 5th Avenue), will feature live music, food and children's activities.

Registration for the 7:30 p.m. walk will be held throughout the opening ceremony.

Participants in the walk will carry illuminated colored balloons (white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer).

San Mateo is among 230 communities across the United States and Canada participating in the event.

About 750 people are expected to participate in the San Mateo event, organizers say.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, funding patient and financial aid programs.
