PHOTO: Great Horned Owl Comes for Nightly Visit

Every evening, a Great Horned Owl visits this photographer's house on Farallon Avenue in Pacifica.

A Great Horned Owl that visits my house every evening is also know as a Coastal Great Horned Owl.

Great Horned Owls are know to be harbingers of change and new beginnings, a predator that hunts from dusk to dawn and does not make a sound while flying.

They are found in North America and the one pictured here is called a Coastal Great Horned Owl.

The Great Horned Owl has a special relevance to Pacifica because its counterpart is the Red Tailed Hawk. They have a ying and yang element and share the same hunting grounds but never see each other.  The owl represents the moon and the hawk the sun.

Owls hunt from dusk to dawn when the hawk is sleeping and the hawk hunts from day to night when the owl is sleeping.

I have spotted two of these owls in our yard during the day on Farallon Ave. They are majestic!

One sits on our chimney on some evenings. We can hear his "hoot" down and into out living room.

I heard two owls last night calling to each other as I walked on Farallon. I would love to see them! It was too dark last night even with the almost full moon.

They're all over Linda mar and the bov too. I used to hear them a lot living off everglades, now when i walk home at night down Linda mar blvd to Alicante i almost always hear one in those trees by Alma heights and if it's quiet enough sometimes i can hear the faint response coming from what seems to be the mountains and they just go back and forth. Love the night life here! the coyotes not so much...had a close call with them once
