City Hosts Free Document Shredding and E-Waste Event Saturday

Bring your sensitive documents and watch as the City shreds them for you. Plus, get rid of old electronics safely. It's all free.

Have you been piling up stacks of old but sensitive documents or unwanted electronics in your home, taking up valuable space?

Well, there's no need to any longer. This Saturday, June 23, the City of Foster City will partner with Rethinkwaste to host a free Document Shredding/Destruction and E-Waste Disposal Event in the parking lot of , 610 Foster City Blvd. at E. Hillsdale.

Local families are invited to bring up to three standard-size "banker" boxes full of documents and other papers to the event, and watch as City representatives use a cross-shredding process to reduce them to fine confetti, right before their eyes.

Locals can also bring their old electronics and turn them in for safe disposal, for no charge.

Certain types of items will be accepted; others won't. Here are examples the City has provided to guide interested residents:

Acceptable Items

Camcorders, cell phones, chips and components, computers, computer monitors, connectors and cables, DVD players, fax machines, keyboards, lab equipment, fluorescent tubes and lamps in small quantities (no more than five tubes per household), laptops, mainframes, mice, optical drives, PC boards, PDAs, printed circuit boards, printers, radios, scanners, servers, stereos, storage discs, tape and zip Drives, televisions, UPS power supply units, and VCRs.

Unacceptable Items

Household appliances (fans, floor heaters, smoke detectors, vacuum cleaners, etc.), kitchen appliances (cooktops, dishwashers, microwaves, ovens, stoves, refrigerators/freezers), large appliances.  Also, household hazardous waste such as motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, automotive batteries, latex paint, large quantities of fluorescent lamps (including compact fluorescents), and household batteries.
