Congregational Church of San Mateo Celebrates 150th Anniversary

The Congregational Church of San Mateo, UCC (CCSM) is hosting a series of events on May 3rd and 4th to mark its 150th Anniversary as a progressive church in San Mateo. A Gala Event on Saturday, May 3rd from 6-10 PM includes dinner, drinks, and a retelling of inspirational historical moments. Since we have outgrown our own social hall, Peninsula Temple Beth El (PTBE) in San Mateo has graciously allowed us to have the event in their spacious hall, which is also a fitting tribute to CCSM history since PTBE held their first services in our space while they were constructing their own.

On Sunday, May 4th, there will be an Anniversary Celebration Service starting at 10:30 AM to lift up 150 years of community service and our work for equality and peace. The service will begin with a processional of our long-term members, some of whom have been part of the community for over a half century.

Senior Minister Penny Nixon says, “As an inclusive spiritual community, all people are invited to join us in this special celebration. Our newly renovated sanctuary is a beautiful place in which to honor our years of service to San Mateo and the Peninsula. In an age and culture where everything changes so quickly, it is important to pause and to acknowledge long-standing institutions that work for peace and equality in every age.”

CCSM has a long history of responding to the spiritual and social needs of its time. Our congregational roots are evident in every aspect of our community life as we value volunteerism and service as the foundation of our church life.

“In looking back on so many social justice and civil rights issues over our 150 year history, we are so proud that CCSM has been on the side that promotes justice for all, the side that we continue to stand on,” says Austin Mader-Clark, Moderator.
