The “latke” in Latkepalooza is a playful reference to latkes (LOT-kuhs), delicious fried cakes of grated potato and egg, often topped with a variety of condiments such as sour cream or applesauce.

Fried foods are a popular Hanukkah tradition because of the significance of oil to the holiday. But mouth-watering latkes won’t be the only thing for guests to relish at Latkepalooza!

This year’s festivities will feature an all-new “do it yourself” theme with arts and crafts workshops that include making your own candles, driedels, sweet treats and other popular holiday gifts.

Adults will have the opportunity to enjoy olive oil and wine tasting. A community sing-a-long and Hanukkah candle lighting ceremony round out festivities.

Hanukkah (Hebrew for “dedication”) commemorates the rededication of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by foreign forces.

Also known as “The Festival of Lights,” Hanukkah celebrates the values of fighting oppression and finding light even during the darkest times.

Its central story concerns the miracle of oil used in the rededication ceremony that lasted for eight days when it was expected only to last for one.

Today Jews celebrate by lighting candles in a menorah every night during the holiday to commemorate this eight-day miracle.

Hanukkah begins at sunset on Saturday, December 8 and lasts through December 16.

In support of Second Harvest Food Bank, guests are encouraged to bring a canned good donation.
