New Farmers Market Kicks Off

Health and Fitness Day welcomed weekend shoppers.

The (PJCC) was packed with families on Sunday for its 3rd annual Health and Fitness Day.

At only one hour into the event, there were already 1,000 attendees — with organizer’s expecting to reach 2,000 by the day’s end.

The event featured a full spectrum of health booths and classes, ranging from family yoga to a healthy cooking demonstration.

One of the most popular activities was the Teddy Bear Clinic, where children were able to watch a Kaiser physician give a teddy bear a health exam. A line for the activity had already formed by 12:30 p.m — 30 minutes before the fair was open.

“It helps kids not to be scared about visiting a doctor,” said Youth and Family Director of the PJCC, Stephanie Levin. “The kids just love it.”

Four-year-old Megan Loverno, who was heading toward the Teddy Bear Clinic, had already checked out some of the other booths.

“I got a jump rope and watched a show where a guy was drinking water out of a big bottle,” she said.

There was also a fitness challenge, where kids got the chance to balance on one foot, jump over small hurdles and do strength tests.

Beyond the activities geared toward children, Kaiser representatives handed out educational materials on health and fitness.

“I was glad that the booths had information for parents and teachers,” said attendee Tripta Johi. “It’s important to spread health information to the classroom as well.”

This event was just one example of the new wellness initiative by the PJCC, which aims to promote an active lifestyle and healthy eating.

“In collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, we will be holding nutritional lectures and preventative health classes for the whole community,” said Chief Marketing Officer of the PJCC, Marshall Platt. “We serve young kids up through seniors, so we can focus on health at every stage of life.”

In addition to the health fair, the event kicked off the season for Foster City’s .

There were approximately 25 venders, selling a range of products including vegetables, fruit, honey, olive oil, bread and seafood.

Hidden Star Orchards located in the Sierra Nevada foothills featured several types of organic apples, dried fruit and ciders. In addition to this market, they sell at markets at the Ferry Building, Campbell and Palo Alto.

The farmers market was run by the California non-profit organization Urban Table, which also organizes the San Mateo and North Beach markets.

“The PJCC was hoping to create a sustainable food organization for residents, so we partnered with them once last year and now for a weekly market,” said Kurtis Wu of Urban Table. “We look forward to being here every week.”

The farmers market at the PJCC will be held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
