Enjoying the Summer Concert Series

Check out the Summer Concert Series at Leo J. Ryan Park

I've been off work for a couple weeks so I have more time to dedicate to my writing. I hope it will make a difference. After a 13-year career at a large Silicon Valley company, I was offered early retirement, so I decided to accept it.

Since I am not ready for a daily dose of geriatric aerobics nor, as mentioned in my last column, am I made of money, I will be starting a new gig in the valley next month. By doing so, I don't need to update my "about this column" info. I think we all agree that I ramble, but I have to admit the Herb Caen reference is overblown. I was considering asking Patch for a large raise to write full time, but I re-read some of my previous articles and came to the conclusion that a weekly column of mine is enough for anybody.

Since I've been spending more time in Foster City, I decided to take advantage of some the events about town. A few weeks ago, my wife and I We got there a little late so had to take a seat on the lawn away from the action. I thought they put on a good show. I wandered up to the top of the amphitheater to see the band. I think the lead singer was rocking a wig, but his tight red pants and tails did a good job of evoking the dress of of a bygone era. I'm old enough to remember Journey from the first time around.

This past Friday, we saw the band 60s Summer of Love. I remember that music from my pre-teen years because I always had my transistor radio tuned to Cousin Brucie at WABC in NYC or my hometown station of WALL, which Brucie eventually bought.

We decided to show up early at the park to get a better seat this time around. We met our friends Patti and Dave, who had arrived even earlier and snagged a prime location. They already had chairs and a table set up. Our friends, Pat and CB, also joined us. Each couple brought an appetizer array and wine so we could nosh throughout the concert.

The 60s Summer of Love did not disappoint. They put on a skilled and lively show, with the lead singer wading into the audience on occasion. We were treated to Beatles, Motown, even Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," replete with drum solo. No, I don't know where they came up with that song title, but Wikipedia may be able to help you if you really need to know. They even did Van Morrrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," making a joke referring to Van Heflin before the song.

They were not only good musicians, they were comedians to boot. The crowd definitely got into the show. Folks of all ages were dancing in front of the stage. I thought about getting up there, but my dancing skills are rudimentary at best. I didn't want to embarrass myself as I have a reputation as a serious columnist to uphold.
